Geocities goodbye with Yahoo! love…
So the other day I received the Geocities closure email warning… That’s rough, that’s tough…
Geocities is where I hosted my first website, back in the 90s… back last century ! Back when everything I was doing on the web was Yahoo! My emails, my websites, chatting & messaging, storing documents (hey remember the portfolio?)… And now I feel bad, I feel guilty, I let down Yahoo! How could I? Yes my homepage is still Yahoo, but it’s more for principle, I just can’t bear to switch to Google (and I have always been made fun of that at work…). I did download the Yahoo widget stuff for my blackberry, but I keep using Google maps app as an a GPS instead, I was an heavy flickr user and now its all Facebook, Picasa or Joomeo to share my zillions of pictures, I spent hours rating songs on Yahoo music to get a perfect personalized music stream and then my friends offered me an iPod, there were years where all my family and friends birthdays were reminded thanks to my yahoo agenda and I would subsequently send a yahoo greetings birthday card, now I feel like I made an effort if I send an email instead of just facebook-wall-wishing the birthday, and the list can go on and on so many services that made the web easy and fun that I used to be a strong user of and that now have been replaced by a bunch of other brands… and I don’t even speak about my SEM budgets at work…
So I don’t know what I can do, I love Yahoo, but I eventually surf away from it and I’m sorry about that! I guess the only thing I can do is be thankful for Yahoo always being there in the beginning, in the very beginning last century and in the beginning of every key as well as minor internet activity and services. I’ll make sure to keep my homepage on Yahoo until the last of your server is down !
Hell with everyone in Europe choosing Google and others over Yahoo!, when you really make the list, no other brand on the web ever offered such a wide range of services, always so early in vision!
I love Yahoo! And you? Do you Yahoo?
